Faces from Sushunia

Sushunia is a tiny village in the West Bengal district of Bankura. The people of Sushunia are recognized for their warm welcome and uncomplicated way of life. They are primarily engaged in agriculture, with rice being the most important crop farmed here. Also, they grow vegetables and fruits for sale in nearby marketplaces. Pottery, weaving, and embroidery are also popular among the inhabitants, with many families making a living from these ancient crafts. They are kind and accommodating to visitors, feel proud of their history and heritage, and are always willing to share their customs with visitors. The community is home to individuals from several communities, including Hindus, Muslims, and Christians. Despite their various backgrounds, the residents of Sushunia live in unity and celebrate each other’s festivals with equal spirit. The existence of a high number of tribal communities is one of Sushunia’s distinguishing traits. These tribes have a distinct culture, language, and traditions that have been passed down through generations. Sushunia’s tribal people are famed for their beautiful beadwork, wooden carvings, and traditional dance styles, which are a sight to behold. There are a few guesthouses and homestays in the village where guests can stay and experience the friendliness of the people. My visits to Sushunia have been an incredible experience, knowing them so closely and staying with them.
