Amazing whale watching experience at Provincetown, near Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Ever been up close and personal with a 50-foot, 40-ton whale? Once you have, it’s an experience you won’t soon forget. I am fortunate to have this experience in Provincetown which is very close to Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Provincetown is the closest port to the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary (SBNMS), a federally protected marine habitat that is home to an amazing variety of marine life including whales, dolphins, sea turtles, deep-sea fish, and sea birds.

It was a fabulous trip! The onboard naturalist was very knowledgeable and shared information about the various whales we saw, he also gave an insight into their life cycle and feeding habits. Initial 30 minutes, there was no whale and it was very disappointing. The captain of the cruise informs us that we were moving back and we were very unfortunate. He was on his way to return at the base, and then he received a call from another whale watching chatter that they were seeing a lot of whales at a different point in the ocean.

Our cruise rushed to that place within 20 min or so, and we were able to see close to 100-120 whales. Captain and onboard naturalists were saying there might be at least 200 whales. Anyway, we really had a good chance to see many of them, I wish I could get a chance to see a jumping one in the air and I had pictures of a whale in the air bend like a bow or like a bird. I always have something incomplete, and it is not desirable to have all in one single trip, but an overall experience, I must say it is good.

I have a few images here, please have a look.

Please note, the whale-watching charters typically run from April to October, so if you are interested in taking one, you may want to plan your visit to the Bay State during the warmer months of the year. If you are interested, check out more information at www.whalewatch.com.
