Chittenango Falls State Park

A picturesque 167-foot waterfall is the main attraction of Chittenango Falls State Park. Glacial sculpting over 400 million-year-old bedrock is responsible for the scenic feature. The park located in Madison County, New York, east of Cazenovia Lake.

I have visited the Chittenango Falls State Park twice so far. It’s about 45 minutes drive from my place where I live now. The first time when I visited there, it was a sunny bright day and I spend a good time with family and got a glimpse of the place and experienced the beauty of the falls.

The park has a few trails, but Gorge Trail gives access to the bottom of the falls and the Chittenango Creek is closed now and it will remain closed till August for construction works. The park authority put an iron gate and locked the doors. But I found a workaround to reach the base on the falls; of course, it is not suggested at all. The trail is still walkable but a little risky and slippery.

The Chittenango Falls and the Rain

For the second time, I went to the park on a Saturday evening, at around 8:00 PM. It was drizzling at that time. Weather report warned saying 80% chance of rain, but I thought that could be interesting. Anyway, I started walking and crossed the fence of the Gorge Trail and when I reached in front of the falls and the Chittenango creek, it was heavily raining.

I took shelter under the trees but that didn’t help much. The rain continued for 15 to 20 minutes, or maybe a little more. I got wet completely by that time. I was more worried about the gears, they got wet too. When the rain reduced a bit, I set up the tripod, mounted my Nikon D800 and Nikkor 16-35mm f/4 on it. Very soon, they soaked up and I had a small cleaning towel and two microfiber cloths and all got wet soon while cleaning the gears.

Eventually, the rain stopped. I was desperately looking for something to clean the front glass of the lens. Without that, I can not take a decent picture, it will look too gloomy. Somehow I found that my socks are not wet. And without opening the shoes, I cleaned the front glass of the lens with the socks and it worked :). At least the water droplets were gone, though there was some residue. But with that, I felt comfortable to shoot.

Chittenango Falls after the Rain

The view after the rain was amazing. It was warm, yellowish, bright, the cloud was peeking up at the far end and created so much drama. I took a few photos.

While returning back, it was pretty dark. The entire park was empty – no one was there. I could see the crescent-shaped moon at the edge. The darkness and the hissing sound of the flowing creek altogether made a transcendental atmosphere.

What goes around comes around… everything we do determines what’s going to happen to us in the future, whether we act honestly, dishonestly, help or hurt others, it manifests as a karmic reaction either in this life or some other form. That’s what I realize strongly while looking at the flowing creek.

As I walked along the trail, I could hear the sound of the flowing water in the distance and the increasing chirps of the small insects in the woods. When I reached the parking lot, as expected, only my car was there and I felt a bit relaxed.

Sunny Day Photos of the Fall

The first time when I visited the falls, I took some photos but due to the bright sunny day, it was a different look and feel altogether.
